Adult Bible & Book Studies

Our Current Schedule

Thursdays
8:30-9:30 a.m.
Men of Bethel (MoB) is on a summer hiatus. Previously, we were studying the first theological novel in the Jewish - Christian tradition. The Book of Judith is deuterocanonical book, included in the Septuagint and the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christian Old Testament of the Bible, but excluded from the Hebrew cannon and assigned by Protestants to the apocrypha. It tells of a Jewish widow, Judith, who uses her beauty and charm to destroy an Assyrian general and save Israel from oppression. The surviving Greek manuscripts contain several historical anachronisms, which is why some scholars now consider the book non-historical: a parable, a theological novel, or perhaps the first historical novel.

We meet on Thursday mornings, 8:30 in the center pod, but all also available on Zoom. New members are welcome and encouraged.  To get the on the email list, contact Wayne Kivell or Kelly Groenewold.

FaB (Faith and Books) is made up of women interested in expanding their faith through the reading of books. FaB's next book will be "If God is Love, Don't be a Jerk: Finding a Faith that makes us Better Humans" by John Pavlovitz. In this book, John Pavlovitz examines the bedrock ideas of our religion: the existence of hell, the utility of prayer, the way we treat LGBTQ people, the value of anger, and other doctrines to help all of us take a good, honest look at how the beliefs we hold can shape our relationships with God and our fellow humans—and to make sure that love has the last, loudest word. John Pavlovitz is a writer, pastor, and activist from Wake Forest, North Carolina who is committed to equality, diversity, and justice.

FaB continues to meet in the Bethel Youth Room on Thursday mornings from 9:30-10:30 a.m.  Contact Lana Reich if you have questions.

Fridays
9-10 a.m.
The WoW (Women of the Word) Bible study group is now meeting on Zoom each Friday at 9 a.m. Currently this group is on a summer hiatus.
If you would like to join us, please contact Myrna Luehmann.  All are welcome!

Monthly
ARLA (Anti-Racism Learning & Advocacy) is a group that wants to learn more about racism, how to actively combat it, and how to be advocates whenever possible. ARLA meets on ZOOM on the third Tuesday of each month from 9:30-10:30 a.m. This month we will meet on Tuesday, April 19, at 9:30 a.m. We are continuing our 2021-22 focus on indigenous people. We will discuss a talk given by Robin Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants, at a Carleton Convocation in 2021. You can access the talk by googling "2020-2021 Chelsey Lecturer: Robin Wall Kimmerer". For more information and to access the Zoom meeting, contact Paula Mathison, pamathiso@yahoo.com, Connie DeGrote, cgdegrote@gmail.com, or Darlene Broughton, dar_gene@yahoo.com. We hope to see you there - bring a friend!
