J-Term is back for Confirmation Students!
Wednesday, January 13 - February 3,
6:30-7:45 p.m.
We’ll all be together at the same time, with a different speaker for each of the four nights of class.
All classes will use this Zoom Link.
January 13 - A Migrant's Journey - Kathy Chatelaine
Each year, thousands of Central American youth leave their families to begin a dangerous journey to the United States. What causes young people to flee their communities? What are the dangers along their journey? How are these vulnerable youth received at the U.S./México border?
Welcome to the migrant journey and AMMPARO! Beginning in Central America, you will virtually walk alongside youth forced to flee their beloved communities with the hope of a new start in the United States. As we journey together, you will also learn about the AMMPARO Strategy, a commitment by our church to accompany migrant children and families. *Sponsored by the SEMN Synod Global Ministry Table and AMMPARO Team
January 20 - Deanna Thompson Faith, Hope, and Lament: Living as a Christian Alongside Incurable Cancer
Deanna Thompson was living her 95% ideal life when she was diagnosed with incurable cancer 12 years ago. Due to medical advances, she is part of a growing group of people with advanced-stage cancer who are living longer and well alongside their diagnosis. But just like many others who experience significant suffering in their lives, Deanna has been challenged to think about how living with stage-serious cancer impacts her faith and her ability to hope. Come join this conversation with Deanna about faith, hope, and lament in light of the tough times of our lives.
January 27 - Emily Fulton It Shouldn't Have to Happen to You For It to Matter to You
The way we show up for each other matters, and the first step to showing up is to understand that the issues exist. Youth are so often overlooked when we try to find solutions to any problem. At NUY, we want to make sure youth understand that if a problem affects you, you are THE MOST IMPORTANT part of trying to find a solution. Tonight we are going to talk about why safe spaces in communities matter, what those spaces look like to each of us, and some of the major social issues that we have started working on in our town. We all get to live here; let's all have a say in what that life looks like.
February 3 Joe Davis & David Scherer (from Luther Sem) Next Faithful Move
In their work and in this class, Scherer & Davis want to help people hear and answer Jesus' call to build bridges between people. They tell stories and share experiences that help us start where we are, move toward becoming ANTI-racists - looking not just for knowledge about racism, but to discover what our next faithful move will be.
